Google Photos is testing some radical changes to image search.
Google Photos appears to be trying out some powerful new search tools, not yet available to users.
The revelation comes from renowned software scrutinizer Jane Manchun Wong, who has recently uncovered a selection of new search filters, currently lying inert within the Google Photos app.
Posting on Twitter, Wong presents screenshots of the potential interface upgrade which includes new ways to refine search results by selecting categories such as “Selfies”, “Motion Photos” or “Videos” as well as individual contacts selectable by a profile picture.
It’s unknown whether the new filters would increase the capability of the already powerful text-based search box. Still, their visual, suggestion-based approach might make it considerably easier to perform more complex searches.
As usual, there’s no guarantee that these tools will make it into a released version of the app, but it’s good to see Google considering radical improvements to fundamental functions like search.
Now we just have to hope the feature isn’t another feature that requires a paid subscription.
