While I have been keeping an eye on this for a while now, the COVID-19 situation did slow things down a fair bit. Thankfully, Super Nintendo World is now open in Japan and there is a lot more going on here than just a regular theme park.
Things like Mario Kart are obviously present, as is areas of classic game levels brought to life. What makes Super Nintendo Land interesting from a gaming standpoint though is the “power up bracelet”.
Once you have bought one of these bracelets and put it on, you can interact with parts of the theme park in new ways. Completing challenges with your friends and racking up points in the process (see the video below).
This turns the whole theme park into one giant Super Mario game and that is entirely awesome as far as I am concerned.
However, while this is called Super Nintendo Land, the focus seems to be primarily be on the Super Mario franchise. Not that this is a bad thing, but I would be interested to see if things like Zelda and Metroid pop-up at some point.
Tickets can be purchased here to go to Universal Studios Japan, but please be aware that this is in Osaka and not Tokyo.
